The fact that Barcelona is not so impressing, it is a very nice looking city where you can visit las Ramblas and the Gothic quarter. The rest of sights like Sagrada Familia and Gaudi architecture are not that interesting. You can have much better time in Madrid as well as other cities like Prague. Barcelona does not have iconic sights such as other major European cities, it is just overrated. In Madrid you can spend countless hours in the museums and walk the city.
Barcelona and Madrid are two different cities and each city has its own merits, but, if one had to choose, Madrid would be the choice. Madrid has great food, kind people, art, vibrant evening atmosphere. Barcelona has developed a theme park quality focused on tourism. Madrid, on the other hand, seems more focused on being itself regardless of tourism. When it comes to food, you need to do some research to find good places to eat in Barcelona because there are many tourist traps. In Madrid, however, it is easier to find good places to eat because the entire city seems devoted to eating.
Spanish is spoken in Barcelona, but the city is the capital of Catalyuna and Catalan is everywhere. So if you are really interested in learning and practicing Spanish Madrid is a much better option. Barcelona is on the beach, but it is probably the ugliest beach. The Barceloneta is surrounded by ugly buildings, a hospital and no landscape. You can tell they constantly have to add sand to the beach. However, Madrid lacks any body of water whatsoever- aside from the resevoir in the Retiro park- and during the summer it is blisteringly hot without a sea breeze.

Barcelona is boring, bland, and utterly pretentious. Gaudi’s as an architect should have had his hands chopped off, appalling designs from both aesthetic and practical viewpoints. Madrid is a real city with history, culture, and none of the pretensions of Barcelona, far more charming, and a place one can actually warm to. The narrow streets of Barcelona are cute, but that is nothing new in Spain. Due to the French influence in Madrid, the architecture in Madrid is a lot like that of Paris, the buildings are gorgeous and classic. Barcelona is home to Dali and Picasso museums. However, nothing can out due Madrid´s Reina Sofia, Prado museum and Thyssen.

There are too many tourists in Barcelona, and local Catalans, that’s why Madrid is a winner with its more open minded Madrilenos. Barcelona and Madrid are completely different cities, right down to the lifestyle prevalent in each, so, drawing logical comparisons is a bit difficult. Each has it’s beauty and drawbacks, but you learn to take the good with the not so good. Barcelona is not a small city by any measurement, but Madrid remains the heart of Spain.
