La Barceloneta is one of the most fashionable districts of Barcelona, it is a shape of a triangle, and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea on two of its three sides. Barceloneta is a former fisherman’s residence in a maritime atmosphere with many typical seafood restaurants to dine at a budget.

Barceloneta is one of the most particular neighborhoods of Barcelona, at few minute walk from Las Ramblas.. Built in the 19th century, it was meant to host the people working at the port of Barcelona, at that time one of the biggest in Europe. Traditionally, this was a poor area – at first a refuge for poor settlers who were mistreated by the French military. Then it became a fisherman’s quarter, with simple and inexpensive homes. The city was never really turned towards the sea, although the port gave work to a lot of new comers. Today those same buildings might be a tad old fashioned, but they’re charming nonetheless.

Just after the Olympic games of 1992, money poured into the area and transformed this sleepy and often not-so-desirable part of town in a buzzing beach hot spot with public art, high rises, and trendy cafes. Barceloneta became what it is today. The city beach can be very crowded and wild, locals and visitors spend humid afternoons on the sand, swimming, playing paddle ball and having picnics, but just having a walk in these narrow streets, sit in a small bar, have some food, gives you the idea of what this place once was.

It is still a very popular neighborhood, with a great indentity, and even if it’s right on the beach, it is not totally invaded by tourists, at least not the interior part of Barceloneta. Not all the charm was washed away, and now some say this beach is one of the best urban beaches in the world. There’s a lot more to do on the beach than swim. There are a ton of places to choose from, and while the beach restaurants are the most popular (because they’re on the sand), they can also be pricey and crowded, not to mention blasting loud music.
