Charles Bridge Renovation’s Open Door Days

Posted September 21, 2009 by King Wenceslas

During open door days, Charles Bridge visitors will be able to check the ongoing renovation work which was by the way, sharply criticized by conservationists. From the 19th till the 26th of September (from 09.00 to 15.00) all the current renovation site will be open to the public.

Every visitor who will come to see Charles Bridge’s renovation work process next two Saturdays, will get from the building company, a gift consisting of a little stone cube used by the masons working on the renovation.

The reconstruction began in August 2007, mainly adding a  new insulation, and exchanging stones in the bridge railing. The work procedures were criticized by the monument inspection of the Ministry of Culture, which last November found out that the work on the bridge undermined the authenticity of such a national cultural monument and considered Prague as a violator of heritage law.
But the magistrate of the city of Prague disagreed with the allegations and considered it as a  minor misconduct in their Heritage department, and fined themselves 54 000 crowns.( around 2 000 EUR)???!!

Charles Bridge, which together with Prague Castle, are the most famous landmarks of Prague, was built by Charles IV, the foundation stone of the bridge pillars was placed on the 9th of July 1357 and the construction, which included the entrance tower on the Old Town side, was under the leadership of the court architect Peter Parler from 1373 to 1380.
