New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Prague

Posted December 1, 2009 by King Wenceslas

Prague is a popular destination for the New Year’s Eve celebrations and several fireworks displays are organized for this event. The celebrations are enjoyed by young and old who can choose to brave the cold and watch fireworks from one of the bridges over the Vltava river, or select a warm restaurant that overlooks the waterway. Prague New Year’s entertainment suits all tastes.

Top spots to get a good view of the brightly-colored displays including Charles Bridge or Prague Castle. Many of the river boats also take tours out, offering an unusual option for New Year’s tourists.
Some people choose a restaurant with an all-inclusive night of fine food and others prefer a romantic, candlelit dinner. Others buy tickets for a party in a popular Party Boat or Jazz Cruise.
More adventurous tourists may want to spend midnight in one of the city’s famous squares. In both the Old Town Square and the Wenceslas Square, locals gather to set off their own fireworks and celebrate the New Year their way.

As midnight approaches, crowds gather around the city to watch one of several firework displays. The restaurants and river boats time their entertainment programs to coincide with this. You can head for anywhere that is on or overlooks the river. This means somewhere near to Charles Bridge, Prague Castle or on Petrin Hill. Some people gather on the terraces at the river restaurants and on the top decks of the river boats, which congregate around Charles Bridge. The atmosphere by the river is fun and relaxed, as people take in the beauty of fireworks over water, with the backdrop of Charles Bridge and Prague Castle.

If you are staying in one of our hotels or apartments in Prague, you can also choose to go to the Old Town Square and the Wenceslas Square. The Old Town Square is very ‘adventurous’ where Czechs enjoy setting off fireworks, and although there is an aerial display, many fireworks at the Old Town Square are handheld and fired by the crowd.

Children that did not stay up for the evening’s festivities won’t either miss the fun as a fireworks display also takes place on New Year’s Day, the 1st of January at 18:00. They can get the best views from the city center or the riverside, as the fireworks are set off from Letna, on the Prague Castle side of Prague.
